Like many residents of Fregon, Kunytjitja went to the mission school at Ernabella. Her mother and father's country is west of Frego, while she was born north west of Fregon in a community at the western end of the Macdonnell Ranges. In Ernabella, Kunytjitja joined the craft room at the mission learning how to make rugs, spin and dye wool and learnt about painting designs in acrylic paints It was here that Kunytjitja first learnt the technique of batik.
Kunytjitja moved to Fregon and finished her schooling there, later marrying in Fregon and had four children. Throughout this time Kunytjitja continued to work with her art and craft practice, making moccasins and floor coverings. She continued her tie dying and batik.
She travelled to Alice Springs and Utopia, teaching her batik and working in batik with woment from different communities. "Know batik, for everybody", she says, describing how she has worked in communities throughout SA, WA and NT, including the Areyonga, Finke, Haast Bluff, Amata and Ernabella. Today, Kunytjitja is most often painting on canvas, mainly walka designs and bush foods. She is also skilled in creating tjanpi baskets, using a combination of materials such as emu feathers, wool, faffia and the native grasses of the local area.
